Trio of Tank Tops
Does a tank top ever go out of fashion? Unlikely I think, but it does seem to be particularly popular this year (2021 for those of you reading in the future!). Back when we had a shop, many moons ago, at least once a week someone would come in asking for a basic tank top pattern. I’ve only just taken the hint (sorry about that!) but to make up for my tardiness I’ve given you three (yes three) versions here! I’ve given instructions for knitting flat and in the round. I’ve knitted mine in the round, mainly because I find sewing up very boring and I’m not overly good at it… feel free to do either (you can only knit in the round up to the armhole anyway. There is an optional roll neck for all three designs (see image at the end). This is separate to the top itself but sits nicely on the neck when desired.
Sizes: S (S/M, M/L, L/XL, XXL) Model wears the S in main picture, but a M/L in the cabled version, giving a boxier fit.
Finished Measurements: Chest: 88 (97, 110, 118, 126)cm 34 ¾ (38 ¼, 43 ¼,46 ½, 49 ½)” (note, the knitted flat version will be fractionally smaller because of seam allowance), Length (shoulder to hem): 46 (46, 49, 52, 59)cm 18 (18, 19 ½ , 20 ½, 23 ½)
Tension: 9.5 sts and 14 rows to 10cm (4”)
You will need: 9mm and 10mm needles (I’d recommend getting circulars regardless of whether you knit flat or not as the circulars will be useful for the neck and arm bands) 60cm
3 (4, 4, 5, 6) skeins Plump Superchunky (shown in Gooseberry Fool – basic pattern, Slushy – cabled, Toffee - colourwork) For Colourwork version, one skein of Plump Superchunky for the Contrast Colour (CC) (shown in Marmalade)
If you want the optional separate roll neck you’ll need an extra skein of yarn
Washing
Plump Superchunky and Plump DK are made from the highest quality superfine merino and baby alpaca. These really are special and luxurious fibres and should be treated carefully! Having said that both yarns are suitable for delicate hand washing. Use a specialist detergent and do not agitate or twist the fibres to retain the gorgeous softness and shape of your garment.
Shedding
Because of the roving nature of our yarns (they are single ply, rather than tightly twisted), some shedding may occur. The best way to deal with this is spray your finished garment with water and leave to dry flat, naturally before the first wearing. This sets the fibres and should stop any problems. Using your yarn
All our yarn comes in skeins. Before using you need to wind the skein into a ball or you will get into an awful tangled mess! If you are not sure how to do this you can watch our video here!
